As some of you may or may not know, I do a bit of work for BAA(British Airports Authority) now and then. They have recently given some advise to employees/contractors which I think is relevant here. Lots of people get hacked through having a simple password like a word in the dictionary or a name. Hardware and software used to hack now is becoming so advanced that even people who use a 4 instead of an A or a 3 instead of an E in words and names are reasonably easy to unlock. The BAA advise is very easy to follow and means you having a better chance of survival should hackers take a liking to your Runescape/site/IRC accounts.

All you need to do is make sure the password is at least eight characters in length and make sure it contains a mixture of one or more numbers, one or more lowercase letters and one or more uppercase letters.

EXAMPLE: 4tFvo5534P

Of course the longer it is and the better mixture of numbers, lowercase and uppercase the more secure it is. People generally dont get my passwords as they are about 26 characters long and complete gibberish. I suggest you do the same bearing in mind you have to memorise them too!

How do you possibly remember codes. I use a random word with capitals in random places, as well as several numbers, and I forget it time to time.

Good points though,

Yeh thanks Jungle. My site and IRC password where relatively easy before but I've changed them so they're almost impossible.

Most strong passes contain characters:

-lower case letters(abc...)
-UPPER CASE LETTERS(ABC...)
-NUMB3R5(123456789)
-$YMB0L$($£%^&*)

depending on the computer (and number of computers) it's virtually impossible to have unbreakable password.

The only way to be sure is to have it so that you get locked out for 15mins after 5 failed attempts or something B)

if people can hack passwords with only a few letters then what stops them from gaining access to any length of password? :S

It takes them a LOT longer and they normally give up where they can get a six character password in an hour or less sometimes.

Yeah, the password generators tend to start on the most likly password, and eventually the least likely, Changing your password regulary can stop them from ever hitting the right one.

So that's how they do it!

Well, then I can be a 100% sure I'll never be hacked !frog1

Just a tip addresses are excellent for this as they contain Numbers and words already, its perfect unless you need to protect against people you know in RL..like a brother who knows the same thing. but for example Richmond89Road..if your aunt lives at 89 Richmond road. It solves the problem of having to remember it. I'm old and have lived in a few places..anyone likely to guess Tantallon24Rd. As i say not great to protect it from your flat mates..but in general its pretty good comprimise between hard security and being able to remember it. Then once you are comfortable with it, you can replace one or 2 of the other letters, with numbers or other random letters..or spell it backwards nollatant24Dr. anway thats how i do mine.

You can't turn certain things on and off they make you who you are. A trustworthy person is trustworthy no matter what, a person with class has class no matter what they are doing. So this really does lead me to think that if you are a **** on the internet, then you are a **** in real life and trying to convince yourself there is a difference is pointless.
