![]() Hi Everyone, I’m Mark Gerhard, Jagex’s CEO. I wanted to respond briefly to a topic that’s had quite a lot of discussion inside the RuneScape community recently – micro payments. Micro payment-based services, such as items on Solomon’s General Store or Treasure Hunter, are an essential part of helping keep RuneScape as a healthy business. If we didn’t offer micro payments we would either need to more than double the cost of monthly membership for everyone or halve the size of the RuneScape team or otherwise make other rather unpalatable choices which we’d rather not contemplate. …And with a healthy business we can and will continue to pour our love into RuneScape at an enviable scale - RuneScape employs a full time development team of around 160 dedicated professionals and totals well over 200 when you include community, infrastructure and customer support. This allows us to release weekly game updates, run community events, run charity events, run Old School, make videos, run livestreams, invest in content and marketing for new players, run entirely free game worlds, create a burgeoning mobile app, perform extensive R&D into new technologies to guarantee RuneScape’s future and continue to hire more great talent from the RuneScape community. It also means we can offer features like Bonds which allows players to pay simply through play, and close to my heart have much of a packed release schedule now decided entirely by the community. Our sole intent with micro payments is to provide interesting but optional services for RuneScape players – fun items, new visuals or greater convenience for those that may want it. It’s NEVER our intention to undermine the games core content. We’re human and we occasionally make mistakes. This undoubtedly happened with the Silverhawk Boots item which was added to Treasure Hunter recently. At release, this item was evidently overpowered and understandably frustrated many players, including both the team and I. I want to sincerely apologise for this error of judgement and process on behalf of everyone. Mistakes are only OK if they’re acknowledged, rectified and learnt from… In this case we’ve already patched the item in question so it does not allow for skill training faster than existing content. Just as important, we’re going to put additional safety checks in place to make sure the balancing of any promotional item or micro-payment service gets double and triple checked by us. As with the rest of the game, micro payments evolve as we try out new ideas and make ongoing improvements. While they’re essential for RuneScape, they are not essential for players to enjoy the game, for those that may want a specific promotional item we also try to make them as accessible as possible to everyone, so everyone can take part if they should they wish. Bonds were a major step in this direction, giving access to all of our premium services without the need to pay real money. Loyalty points reward our long standing members. And recently, we’ve also added more methods to get RuneCoins without paying through supersonic ads – you can find the new ‘Earn’ button in Solomon's General Store to take part in this, and also soon we’ll be adding the ability to earn Keys to play Treasure Hunter as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my post today. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter and please keep the constructive feedback coming! I hope you can see how much we all care about RuneScape, both as a business, a game and a community – and one we want to see thrive for many decades more to come. Take care and have fun! Wonder how long it will be before they just failed to pre-test stuff again? They seem to spend more time on extra's to earn more money which the spend developing extra to earn more money and so on an so on and etc etc. Unless this changes it can only end one way

At this point i'd like to personally thank each and every one of you who pays actual money for the pointless cosmetic items, as you're the ones pumping development money into OSRS for me. Bit worrying if the people playing Barbiescape and dressing up their characters are this vital to keeping the game going though, not getting enough subscriptions? |

They saw they were overpowered at the minute they were released. They've nerfed similar things within hours before. This time they conveniently waited until promotion was over and all the money milked before bothering to notice. The apology has got nothing to do with the boots itself. The only reason he is apologizing because his money gaining methods failed this time, people actually reacted to it. I do not know the number but not a small amount of people have quit/started playing a lot less regularly after this latest sof ****. I personally know quite a few, including myself, whose playing hours in RS3 have dropped quite rapidly. I got no concrete proof if that is the case more widely but I believe it is, otherwise you wouldn't be seeing that post there. I think microtransactions are only necessary because they were released in the first place. They dug their own grave and started depending on a revenue source that isn't permanent and has severe negative side effects. It is now fundamental part of their budget. I refuse to believe for a second that the extra money they've gained from this has been worth it. You could name me all the updates they've released since the release of the sof and you could pick at least 50% of them and say they are not essential to the game and aren't bringing new players in or keeping old players here. And that's not including the sof/solomon updates. Personally I don't seem much harm if kids want to buy their new giraffe or rhino outfit but anything that could be bought that gives even a small benefit to the gameplay compared to other players is deeply wrong and devalues the game for everyone. Runescape simply isn't fun enought for players not to care. Edited by Myrine, 28 Mar 2014, 07:47 AM.

I dont really care about all the solomon stuff thats fine to make money for a growing business and cosmetic has no real affect on the game, its when people can take a big leap in efficiency with real life cash and do better basically than people who train skills normally. Going for xp and highscore ranks is now basically impossible if you don't use treasure hunter |

Going for ranks/xp milestones became almost pointless the moment Jagex decided Exp was something they could hand out by the bucketload. It doesn't matter how much effort goes into your achievements, this time next year a person will be able to do what you did with half the effort. |
